Experiencing the Solar Eclipse in Las Vegas

By Natalia Castro - NW Las Vegas and Summerlin Publisher August 20, 2017

Nearly everyone I know is talking about this week's solar eclipse. They are debating if students should be allowed to be outside to see it at school, the best ways to view if you don't have eclipse glasses and what it can mean on a astrology or even religious level. It's so interesting to hear everyone's perspectives.

This week's newsletter has your solution in case you didn't get solar glasses. Check out the many ways to view the eclipse without them but make sure to NOT look directly at the sun.

I have been looking through NASA's website and they have a lot of fun resources to both learn about and celebrate this phenomenon.

Find NASA inspired and approved activities here. They have art projects, learning modules and links to many resources.

Looking for lesson plans? Here you can find lessons broken down by age group and category.

The Eclipse Kit is a FREE downloadable kit with activities you can do to experience the eclipse.

My favorite fun eclipse activity is this edible sun activity! Talk about the eclipse and the surface at the sun while watching the Live Stream from NASA.

If your kids are falling in love with astronomy they can continue their learning at CSN's Planetarium which offers programs every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Check out their information here

Most elementary schools will have indoor recess and lunch to protect curious eyes from looking directly at the sun and experiencing permanent damage. If your student's school is offering solar glasses make sure to talk to your student about the danger of looking directly at the eclipse and don't forget to sign the permission slip if you want them to participate.
